USCCB Articles about the Year of Mercy

From December 8, 2015, through November 20, 2016, Pope Francis has declared the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

This will be a time to call to mind not only our own works of mercy, but to be thankful for times when others have shown us mercy in some way. Moreover, this is a time to be contemplative of God’s incredible mercy towards his people. Christ dying on the cross for the salvation of the World was the single greatest act of mercy.

Consider the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy during this special time. Are there any which you have neglected in any way? This is the time to correct that, but also a time to ask for mercy.

The great act of mercy through reconciliation (confession) will be a featured topic throughout this year, and encouragement to go to confession regularly will be given. This is also a call to come back to confession for those who have not been in some time, or to those who think their sins are too great to be forgiven. Nothing pleases Jesus more, than to be able to forgive our sins when asked.

The corporal works of mercy:

To feed the hungry;

To give drink to the thirsty;

To clothe the naked;

To harbor the harborless;

To visit the sick;

To ransom the captive;

To bury the dead.

The spiritual works of mercy:

To instruct the ignorant;

To counsel the doubtful;

To admonish sinners;

To bear wrongs patiently;

To forgive offences willingly;

To comfort the afflicted;

To pray for the living and the dead.
